Everyone has that one go-to song, album or concert to lift us up out of the blues, shake us out of a slump, pull us out of a dark hole. Just recently, I interviewed author Ray Robertson, who has written an amazing book titled All The Years Combine: The Grateful Dead In Fifty Shows. I asked him if there is one specific concert that he goes to when he's in the need for a pick-me-up. He said it isn't a specific concert but more of a specific song and that's "Scarlet/Fire".
Technically speaking, this is two songs - "Scarlet Begonias" and "Fire On The Mountain", but Dead Heads know that whenever Jerry and the boys seamlessly transitioned from one song into another, it forever became one.
Below is a hypnotizingly delightful version of "Scarlet/Fire" from what many consider the best Dead show of them all - Barton Hall at Cornell University in Ithica, NY May 8th, 1977.
Let's jam...
